A properly performed lip lift offers multiple benefits. As we age, the upper lip stretches and lengthens, causing the red part of the lip to roll inward, making it appear thinner. The lip also falls, covering the upper teeth, which can age the mouth. By shortening the upper lip, these effects are reversed, giving the midface a lifted, rejuvenated look. The increased “red show” creates a fuller, more youthful appearance, which is often desirable even for younger patients.
The results of a Lip Lift are permanent. The upper lip continues to age however, as does the rest of the face.
Most patients tolerate a Lip Lift under local anesthesia (numbing medication) with or without oral medications for light sedation. Moderate to deep sedation can be offered if a patient would not tolerate being awake.
The procedure takes one hour. Dr. Gray will customize an incision design based on an individual’s anatomy, facial harmony, and contour of the Cupid’s bow. The incision is made, a small strip of upper lip skin is removed, and the upper lip is advanced upward and a meticulous, multilayered closure ensures a nonvisible scar.
Patients go home that same morning or afternoon.

After the procedure, the upper lip will be sore and swollen, with swelling peaking in the first few days. This is normal and not dangerous. Keep the incision clean and covered with antibacterial ointment for about a week. Sutures will come out in our clinic within 3-4 days.
Limit activity for several days, avoiding exercise for around 10 days. Initial healing takes 2 weeks, with final results visible in 2-3 months. The scar improves over several months to a year to nearly invisible.
