Reduce Wrinkles & Maintain A Natural Look

About Botox

BOTOX can significantly improve dynamic facial wrinkles, which occur due to muscle contractions during facial expressions like frowning. These lines may vanish when the face is at rest, but can remain visible as dynamic creases. BOTOX, a refined form of botulinum toxin (type A), temporarily inhibits the movement of the underlying muscles and tissue.

To reduce the visibility of these dynamic lines and wrinkles, BOTOX is administered to relax and smoothen the skin. The injections are typically targeted between the eyebrows where the “11” lines form, around the Crow’s feet, and across the forehead.

About Dysport

Dynamic wrinkles result from repeated facial movements and expressions, such as laughing, frowning, and smiling, which over time cause facial muscles to tighten. This leads to grooved lines in the overlying skin that remain visible even when the face is at rest. Dysport is specifically formulated to address one of the most prevalent dynamic wrinkles: the vertical lines between the eyebrows, commonly referred to as frown lines. It works by temporarily halting signals to the muscles, smoothing out the lines while ensuring the results look natural and do not give the appearance of a ‘frozen’ face.

Dysport is similar to Botox in mechanism of action by blocking the chemical signaling required for muscle contraction, however Dysport is a smaller neurotoxin protein than Botox, which allows it to spread across a larger area while Botox stays closer the injection site.

How to make Botox Pain Free?

For most patients, BOTOX is a simple and straightforward process with no additional steps needed. However, we can incorporate several techniques to make the experience even more comfortable:

Distraction Tools: We use vibration tools to minimize discomfort and make the process nearly pain-free.

Numbing Cream: While there are many numbing products available, these tend to be less effective compared to other methods.

Ice: Some patients find ice helpful, though results can vary. It is available for those who prefer it.

Nitrous Oxide: Rarely needed for BOTOX, nitrous oxide (Pro-Nox) is an option for patients with extreme sensitivity to injections. However, most patients find it unnecessary due to the effectiveness of our distraction tools.

Areas to treat with Botox or Dysport

Forehead

  • The muscle fibers run vertically, and contraction creates horizontal lines.
  • Anatomy varies; some patients have significant midline overlap, while others do not.
  • Interacts with the procerus and orbicularis oculi muscles.
  • Contracting the upper portion can lower the hairline, while contracting the lower portion elevates the brows.

Glabella

  • Made up of the corrugator and depressor supercili muscles.
  • Brow depressors lie deep, and deeper injections may lift the medial brow, though this is hard to demonstrate clinically.
  • Corrugator Supercili: The only muscle with a bony connection, originating medially on the skull and laterally inserting into the eyebrow skin and frontalis fascia.
  • Procerus: Contributes to horizontal lines and brow descent; BOTOX can slightly elevate brows here.

Bunny Lines

  • Caused by the nasalis muscle, creating transverse lines on the nose.

Crow’s Feet

  • Inject 1–2 cm away from the orbital rim.

Masseter Muscle

  • Slim an overly square jawline, creating a more oval or heart-shaped face.
  • Weakening the masseter over time reduces its size, narrowing the jawline.

Perioral BOTOX

  • Smoker’s Lines: Vertical lines from excessive orbicularis oris contraction; avoid the cupid’s bow area.
  • Gummy Smile: Addressed by targeting the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle.
  • Downturned Smile: Treated with injections into the depressor anguli oris.
  • Peau d’Orange (chin dimpling): Treated with mentalis muscle injections.

BOTOX & DYSPORT FAQs

Who is a candidate for Botox / Dysport?

Botox or Dysport is an excellent nonsurgical option for improving moderate to severe frown lines (glabellar lines) between the eyebrows. These dynamic wrinkles, caused by chronic muscle use, can appear at any age and give a tired or angry look. Botox or Dysport works quickly and effectively to smooth wrinkles without creating a “frozen” appearance. Because it spreads to treat multiple lines, it’s also ideal for Crow’s feet around the eyes. Most patients at Gray Facial Plastic Surgery see visible improvements within a few days, with results lasting up to four months.

What can you expect after Botox / Dysport treatment?

After a Botox or Dysport treatment, mild swelling and redness may occur around the injection sites but typically disappear within a few days. Sleep upright for at least one night and use a cold compress as needed. Results usually appear within a few days, softening dynamic wrinkles for a smoother look. Effects last about 3–4 months, with additional treatments available to maintain your results.

What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?

Both Botox and Dysport are cosmetic injections designed to reduce dynamic facial wrinkles. They are derived from the neurotoxin Clostridium botulinum but differ in size—Botox is a larger protein molecule, while Dysport is smaller. This allows Dysport to spread more easily across a larger muscle area, making it ideal for treating areas like the forehead. Both work by blocking nerve signals at the neuromuscular junction, preventing muscle contractions. Dysport typically shows results faster and lasts longer than Botox.

What is the cost of Botox and Dysport?

Dr. Gray believes in complete transparency with pricing. Dr. Gray’s nonsurgical fees are located on the Overview and Prices Page.

Is Botox or Dysport covered by insurance?

For a select group of patients experiencing hypertonic facial paralysis, hemifacial spasm, or synkinesis, treatment with Botox may be requested through insurance, usually necessitating prior authorization. Dr. Gray offers treatment for these conditions, and our team is available to assist with the insurance process.
